This is my guide to what EBL or PBL is and how to study effectively with this format.
What is EBL/IBL or PBL
EBL stands for Enquiry Based Learning, PBL stands for Problem Based Learning. In essence, the learning is structured around an initial case material e.g referral or medical notes. Learning outcomes, lectures, and practicals are then based on this.
What are the benefits of EBL/IBL or PBL learning format?
How to study effectively with EBL or PBL format
- Look at the timetable and do a little preparation before each session (e.g. theory lecture or practicals)
- Address your areas of knowledge gaps both before and after each teaching session - this will serve you well later
- Focus on depth rather than breadth and make sure you understand the topic well.
- Create a work schedule with your own deadlines
- Make sure you do as much of the session pre-work as possible before the teaching session
- Ask the lecturers/clinicians (if they are leading the session) any questions you have
- Look at case studies for the condition you are studying during that topic and relate the information to your lecture/session notes and/or textbooks/useful resources
- Create your revision notes the day after the teaching session using evidence-based study techniques (see my effective study and memorisation techniques blog post)
- Create an end of session review questions to check your comprehension and retention of knowledge
- Enjoy learning!
