My tips for searching for a room and important information about deposits.

My advice

Start looking on the sites recommended below at least a month before moving for your job. In larger cities, there will be more rooms available.

Ask HR or team members' advice for popular areas to live in and those to avoid. Look at the adverts for rooms on the map option to check their proximity to the Hospital you will be working at. Using Google Streetview is a useful way to check whether the street the property is on, does or doesn't look like a rough area to live in.

If you are struggling to find a place to rent, research Hotels, Self-catered accommodation and Bed and Breakfasts. These are good short-term fallback options.

Useful websites to find a room to rent

SpareRoom This site provided the most rooms for rent adverts in the South where I was relocating to. It has a saved search option that enables emails to be sent to your inbox daily with adverts meeting your search criteria. They also email new adverts which meet your criteria too.

Roomgo You post a room wanted advert on the website and the system email you adverts meeting your criteria or responses from individuals interested in your advert.

Gumtree House or Flat Share Basically works the same as buying items of Gumtree.

Rent deposit

In the UK, by law, the landlord or renting agency has to keep your deposit in a deposit protection scheme.

These are the three recommended schemes by the UK government:

  1. Deposit Protection Scheme (DPS)
  2. Mydeposits
  3. Tenancy Deposit Scheme

Top tip: Do not be disheartened if the room you really wanted goes or you take a while to find a room. You will find a lovely place to live eventually.
