This is my guide to what an OSCE is, how to prepare for it and how to do well.

What is an OSCE?

It is an practical exam that examines your consultation skills. It was originally create for Medical students. The exam has stations with different case studies or sections of examination (e.g. Assessment then management). You are given a period of time to read the question and think about what you would do, then you proceed to the station and deliver your ideas or management etc. You will be guided through by the marker who will ask questions.

How to prepare for it

Practice your practical skills with peers. Talk to 2nd or 3rd years about the structure of the exam to help you shape your practice to what you will be examined on.

Use case studies or your own questions to help you stimulate an exam environment and use these to practice. Put yourself under timed conditions and practice. Seek feedback from peers and use this to improve your technique and skills.

How to do well

  • Practice under timed conditions
  • Know your conditions and examination
  • Review movement analysis e.g. LL or UL
  • Know your anatomy and physiology

Useful resources

  • Clinical Case studies in Physiotherapy
  • Geeky Medics OSCE guides
  • Petty and Moore
  • Tidy's Physiotherapy
